As a bit of backstory I’d just like to point out that my skin has gone through some pretty rough changes and it came out the other side looking damn good. So, for anyone thinking that there’s no way they’ll ever escape acne or blemishes. Chill out. It happens but it takes a long time and it actually will make it a lot worse if you stress over it. I’m not just saying that, I’m completely serious. Stress produces a higher volume of ‘sebum’ which is a fancy scientific word for oil and that combined with the dead skin cells and bacteria already on your face = acne. So, take it from me and chill the fuck out.
The first thing I did for clearer skin is come up with a routine. I know most people say not to try new products because then you’re skin will breakout but I think that if you do it rapidly and don’t have a constant among the products you’re using that you’re more inclined to get pimples. This being said, it’s okay if you try new things. Just be sure to stick to your routine. My technique is always Cleanser > Toner > Moisturizer.
For cleansers, I recommend what I’ve been using since I was 15 and that’s Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser. It contains a salicylic acid and its known to be a blemish treatment. It’s worked with my skin throughout the years and I love it. Wouldn’t trade it for any of the fanciest, most expensive cleansers in the world. Not even the ones made with real gold. This cleanser is made to prevent breakouts for clear, even-looking skin. That’s literally what it says on the bottle. No bullshit. This is for my skin type and it that’s a combo of dry and oily but if you know of something for more specific skin types then drop a comment below and let me know.
My next step in my routine is actually my favorite: TONER. I always use it after cleansing but before moisturizer. I really want to just take minute and talk about what toner is and why it pretty much saved my skin. Even after I cleansed and moisturized, I still had whiteheads and blackheads. They literally wouldn’t go away no matter how many products I tried. Until, I stumbled upon on a Pinterest article explaining toner. I’ll link it here but this is the summary. You see your face has something called a pH level. “pH” stands for ‘potential Hydrogen’ which is a number between 0-14 that states how acidic your skin is. It’s not bad but your number should be somewhere around the middle like a 5.5, that means your skin is slightly acidic but it protects you from bacteria and other things building up on your skin. Cleansers rip this barrier off and the tap water you use has 5-6% chlorine in it, that can dehydrate your skin and dry it out, same as if you shampoo your hair too much. Toner essentially restores this barrier on your skin and helps protect against breakouts and dry/oily skin.
My fav toner right now is Mario Badescu Facial Spray With Aloe, Herbs, and Rose Water.
My final step for my everyday skin care is to moisturize and this is gonna hurt your soul and most definitely your bank account but I’m telling you the more expensive the better. It sucks so much ass but I’ve searched high and low and I can never seem to find a good moisturizer for cheap. The one I currently use is from Aveeno as well. It’s the Aveeno Clear Complexion Daily Moisturizer that goes with the cleanser I use. It’s usually $14.99 at Target for 4.0 fl oz. and to me that’s a lot of money to spend on 4 oz of product. So, to soften the hurt of this tragedy, I like to remind myself that LESS IS MORE. Your face is small portion of your body. You don’t actually need a lot of product to moisturize.
If anyone has better products for cheaper, let me know in the comments below what kind of moisturizer you use.
